Topic: 1942 Ford Convertible Top

I received this question in the mail yesterday as I have never owned a 1942-1948 Ford Convertible I do not know the answer. I am hoping that someone out there can help me out. How do you adjust the convertible top mechanism. At present I have to close the top by hand. As the top closes one of the little arms at the main hinge kicks backwards(toward the rear of the car)and locks up leaving a gap of 2 plus inches on the driver's side top latch. The passengers side closes nicely and the little arm in question is positioned forward. I have really at a lose because I tired to move this hinge up-down-forward and back with the same results. What am I missing? What about the top closure motors? Are they synchronous or asynchronous motors? If not synchronous how are they synchronized? Is there a wiring schematic available? I believe that the 2 electric motors are synchronized. Thank you for any help and may you all on the Forum have a Happy and a Safe New Year. Fred Killian

  Fred,

Most shops that replace convertible tops, know how to make the adjustments. I do not have the adjustment procedure. It was published in the 1941 Service Letters, but most copies do not have the body section information.

The top that your corespondent wrote about seems to have some worn parts.

Maybe Supereal will chip in as he has in the past when convertible questions come up.

I sent you a PM.

Tom

Tom, Thank you for your response and the PM. I found the answer in the 1939-1948 Ford Service Manual from Canada. It explains how to adjust the top and wiring diagram too. Have a Happy New Year and thank you again. Fred Killian
