What is the best oil to use in the B-W Overdrive Transmission. Have a 1953 Ford with this trans. and have some questions: Do both the main trans. and the O/D units take the same kind of oil? What is the capacity of the main transmission? What is the capacity of the Overdrive unit? What is the best way to fill the transmission at home?

Also, when filling the transmission, does it drain into the overdrive? Are you filling both units when adding to the transmission?

When I bought my '47, which has a BW R10 overdrive installed about 8 inches forward of the differential, I contacted LLyod Young in Ohio who at 84 was still building and restoring BW OD setups. He said to use SAE 140w gear oil, regardless of season or location, to change the gear oil every 10,000 miles, and not to have the OD engaged when in first gear. I do that and use StaLube 140w GL-4 by CRC. I found Amazon.com w/free shipping comparatively less expensive.

My tranny is separate and I use StaLube GL-4 SAE 85w-90 year-round in that. That viscosity enables smoother shifting. Some like to change to the thicker SAE 90w-140 for summer.

I buy both in gallon containers and use a small hand pump to fill them, including the differential (where I also use 140w).

I fill all to the level of the fill hole.
