Topic: Speedometer gear ratio adapter

jehn    -- 12-04-2015 @ 4:10 AM
Is there anybody who has mounted a speedometer gear ratio adapter? This little thing will be nice if you of some reason want to change the speedometer ratio. However on early Ford it seems to be a little problem with the cable connection at the gear end.
Does anybody have a solution of that?

Jehn, we'll need more information regarding your problem. Are you talking about the original ford part, called the "turtle", which is available with different ratios? And what is your problem with it?

  Hello Alan
The adapter is of make ACDelco and US made and is not a Ford part. The problem is that the Ford speedometer cable doesn´t fit directly on the adapter because of the nut or screw or threads.
As I understand one have to do some "home making" to get fitting. Thats the problem and I hoped that any Ford friend would know something about it.
I have never heard about the "turtle" but may be that´s a better solution if it´s an original Ford part.

There is no need for an auxillary device since the speedometer turtle (mounted on the torque tube) can be purchased with different gears tooth count. See the Ford green chassis parts book from 1950. The gears match the tire size and differential ratio.

I did not knew about the turtle but it can be a nice solution if it can do what I want. That is to change the speedometer showing from mph to kmph as I live in Sweden.
I think the gear speed must up 61% to do that.
Which turtle shall I use to do that?
My car is a 1941 Ford.

Changing the "turtle" will not help you as the ones available in the US are calibrated for MPH. I believe that the KPH speedometer just used a different face. hen I was in Germany, my Chevy had a face that had both sets of numbers on it.

I would check with one of the European RG to see if someone there has a solution for you. Here is a link to the Group in Sweden.

  Thanks Tom.
I will check the "Europé way".
I am a memeber of the Swedish V8 club but I could not find any solution there but I will try again.
Do you know anything about the speedometer gear ratio adapter in my first question?
That´s are probably the solution but the cable connection at the gear box is a little problem.
That adapter is not a Ford part.

I not know anything about the adapter that you asked about in your first post.

Here is a link to a company that sells the adapters. You might try contacting them to see if they have a solution for your problem. They deal mostly with more modern cars, but might have a solution for you.

Here is a link to an UK firm that makes custom dial faces.
