What car are you working on? Do you mean that you lost power going to the switch or you have power at one side of the switch and when press the pedal the circuit doesn't close? If that is the case it sounds like you need a new switch. If you are running DOT 5 the failure of switches is common unless you use a special switch designed for DOT5. Back track from the switch wire to where ever it goes an see if you have power there. Keep going and you will eventually find power. You most likely have a bad connection or shorted wire in the system in that line. .ken ct.

If you don't have a wiring diagram you can find one at: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_home.htm If your wiring is original (is it?) you should get power to the brake light switch from the wires that go to the end of the steering column. Is anything else not working? Have you done anything to the car recently that might be the problem? Do you have any extra fuses in the system? CHARLIE, THE CAR IS ALL ORIGINAL, IVE HAD IT FOR 50 YEARS, HAVEN'T HAD IT OUT OF THE GARAGE FOR A LONG TIME, THE REAR LIGHTS HAD TO BE REWIRED BUT STILL CAN'T GET STOP LIGHTS TO WORK. LET ME CHECK THE STEERING COLUMN AND SEE IF THATS WERE IT FEEDS FROM. THANKS BILL SCHRECK

Bill, If you can't find the wire at the bottom of the steering column the '40 standard feeds power from the light switch and the '40 deluxe feeds from the circuit breaker panel. Any chance someone picked up power from those points on your '39? Are you lucky enough that the wires are color coded? The site I referenced earlier shows color coding for the wires. There should be a group of 3 wires with connectors just behind the light switch. The yellow wire goes to the gas gauge sending unit, green wire goes to the stop light switch and the black wire goes to the license and tail lights. The colors may be faded, so here is how you can determine the color. The yellow wire is only hot with the ignition switch on. The green wire is hot all of the time, it gets its power from the common of the light switch. The black wire is hot only when the parking or headlights are on. Tom
