  hi j-grif
is it running rich, like blowing black smoke out the tailpipe ?
does it rev up,ok?
does in make your eyes water, when idleing ?
is the choke all the way off ?
how does it idle ? is it smooth or rough ?
what is the compression in the cylinders ?
with a vacuum gauge, at idle what does it read,?
how does it run down the road, runs good,,runs bad ?
what rear end ratio do you have,?
how many miles to the gallon are you getting now,?
do you go up a lot of hills ?
last thing what you want to do is the carb,
if you have done all the checking,
then maybe you could check the 2 main jets, and make sure they are to specs,
they might have been drilled out for speed,by previous owner,
you will have to use number drill to check the sizes, and may have to change with smaller ones,
just do not go by the numbers on them,
this can be done on the car,
also check the float level should be checked, and maybe ajusted,to proper level
hope this helps, 37RAGTOPAMN

In most cases, fuel consumption is secondary to smooth performance in old cars which are lightly driven. While the condition and adjustment of the carb is important, so is the overall condition of the engine, including compression, timing, etc. Being sure no brakes are dragging, front end toe-in is correct, and that tires are inflated to at least 30-32 pounds. Overall, 12-14 mpg average is usual for most of us. The only adjustable parts of the carb are the idle screws and the float level, leaving very little impact on mileage.
