Topic: 51 and 53 steering boxes interchangeable?

My 51 coupe has so much slack in the steering box that I can turn the steering wheel about 1/4 of a turn from side to side before the tires move.

Tried to adjust the slack out of it today, and the tension screw will not turn in or out.

I happen to have a 53 Ford parts car that IIRC has fairly tight steering, and I am wondering if I can just drop my 51 steering box out and slap the 53 steering box in it's place with no modifications?

If not, does anyone know where I can buy a guaranteed tight steering box? I drive this car as much as possible, and don't want to take it off the road any longer than I have to .

First of all make sure that the box is tight to the frame. The 49-51 cars have had problems with the box bolts coming loose. Also the one that passes through the frame can get rusty and break. You may not know it is broken, but it allows the box to move on the frame.
If all bolts are tight I would recommend you send the box to the Lares Corporation for a rebuild. they advertise in the V-8 Times. In addition I would make sure your tires are good. Old tires can contribute to your problem.

1/4 of a turn seems like a lot to come only from wear in the box.

Before you remove your steering box make sure that the tie rod ends and the idler arm are not contributing to the problem. There should be zero movement when you jack up one front wheel and try to turn it to the left and right of the car by grabbing the front and back of the wheel.

The 51 and 53 steering boxes have different P/N. They would not be directly interchangeable.

Lares has a pretty good turnaround and may have an exchange for your 53 box.

When adjusting the slack in the sector shaft, be sure to have the weight of the car off of the wheels.
