Topic: Rear Window Sealant Removal?

RAK402    -- 09-24-2015 @ 12:04 PM
I have taken the rear windows out of my 40 sedan. There is a lot of sticky stuff left over from where the rear window seals were (plus some disintegrated rubber from the last time I had these changed in 1976).

Is there some chemical I can use to remove this, from both the glass and the paint, that will not damage the glass or the paint?

Thank you all in advance.

It depends on the type of sealer that was used so long ago. In any case, I'd protect the paint around the area from solvents. In most cases, lacquer thinner will work, or acetone would be next. It is wise to remember that both types are highly flammable, and should only be used in a well ventilated area free of any flames 3M makes a solvent/cleaner that is generally available in parts houses, or places that handle automotive paint.

The 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover is safe to use on most paints and does a good job of removing the adhesive. The dried out rubber may come off with the solvent, otherwise you will just have to be very careful and use lacquer thinner on the rubber.
