Topic: '37 Ford engine color for 60hp V8

Tim_Bowers    -- 03-05-2010 @ 3:44 PM
I tried to use the search function to avoid asking a question that had been asked already, but came up empty.

What is the color of the 60hp V8 engine cast iron? The obvious answer is green, but the engine was red when we took it out, and in corresponding with others a while back when we thought we needed a replacement engine, we were given photos of rebuilt engines and they were red, too.

The club's tech help for '37 told us green, but I just need to ask before I paint it, just in case he missed the detail that I was asking about a V8 60.

Thanks,

The 1937 Ford restoration book states on page 8-12: "Cast iron parts were painted green motor block Pyroxin lacquer. The stamped steel parts were black Japan enamel. Cast aluminum part were left natural". The 37 book and the 1939 book are excellent reference manuals as I am sure are the other years,I would think these should be added to any restoration facilites library, especially in a teaching or training shop.

The 1940 60 HP engine was painted maroon, so you may have a 1940 engine. The 39 and 40 engines had cast iron block without the stainless steel plates covering the water passages.

The steel sided 60 h.p wasn't used in my 37 built in May of 37,it was also cast iron block,so evidently no 1938 Fords had steel sides either. According to Motor Building ledger numbers in new 37 Ford resto book,"they began assembling engines with cast iron sides 3/11/37 but they were not 100% of production until number 54-219400,4/23/37. My 60 h.p is now in a motorcycle in Florida,it replaced a leaking steel sided one and I replaced with a 59AB and Merc crank.
