My 47 flat head V8 engine needs some work. Compression is low in all cylinders: 60-75 lbs dry, 105-120 with oil. Can anyone recommend an expert flat head engine rebuilder? I live in El Paso,TX; would take the engine anywhere in TX,NM,AZ, ... even S. Calif, if that's the best. Any recommendations?

Whats wrong with 105 - 120 with oil? That should run forever. I don't think compression is your problem unless you are reading it to compete in the around the world race." What else is it that you are wanting it to do? 1934 Ford's since 1972

I was under the impression that the normal compression is around 100 psi and that if compression is improved with oil it suggests possible piston ring problems. Would you consider 60-75 psi as normal or acceptable compression? The car does run well with good power other than some stalling problems when I come to a stop which may be a carburetor adjustment issue.

Normal compression should be around 100 psi. The measurement should be taken on a warm engine with all plugs removed, a good battery and the throttle plates wide open. Your readings alone do not indicate that you should rebuild the engine. Unless you are burning a lot of oil (1 qt /300 miles), and your engine runs well, I would live with it. Tom

Tom, no excessive oil consumption. Maybe I should leave well enough alone. I'm not looking for more work.
