Topic: Later flathead fit in 1933 ?

Have a stock 1933 Fordor. Has a tired but running August '34 engine in it now. I want to rebuild a drop in later 21 or 24 stud V8 flathead. Do not want to cut or drill frame - hoping that later engines will "drop in" and bolt up as far as motor mounts and tranny. Looking to answer question: What flatheads will fit in my '33? Understand mains were inserted starting late '36 and have seen informative VanPelt Sales web pages but did not find answer to this question.

All of the 21 stud engines made through 1938 are a “drop in”. This was so common that Ford actually made block off plates for the front of the blocks of the 1937 and 1938 engines that let you use the engines with your water pumps in your original heads. The insert bearings actually started in late ’35 and were made concurrent with the babbit bearings until the end of 1936. The ’36 engines with inserts are probably the most valuable since it takes an expert to tell that they are not original in a ’32 through ’35 vehicle. The 1937 and 1938 engines were all inserts and can be identified by the fact that the water pumps were at the front of the block. Most or all bolt on stuff from a ’33 will go on any 21-stud engine. You need to watch for pop up pistons versus flat top pistons and be sure the heads clear the pistons. The 1939 through 1948 flatheads are relatively easy to put in and there is a lot on HAMB (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/) on this topic (use their archives).
