I see in the manuals that the 53 turn signal switch has an improved cancelling mechanism. Will the 53 switch fit into the 52 housing, wiring assembly and the pawl cancelling collar on the steering wheel? The pawls on mine no longer cancel.

There should be no difference. Actually I think the repo switch for the F-100 pickup is the same as the one in your car. The 52 and 53 steering wheel are the same. All parts from one or the other should interchange.
