Topic: 42 gas gauge problem

42oink    -- 09-01-2015 @ 2:36 PM
I recently put one of Carpenters fuel sending units in my 42 Ford. I put in some gas and proceeded to drive around. The gauge read about half full when, yup, I ran out of gas. The sender at empty reads 94 ohms and the needle does go back to empty with the ignition off. The float arm is adjusted to go to the bottom of the tank and even hanging out of the tank, it will not go to empty on the gauge. What is the resistance supposed to read at empty. Please help. The wife is tired of pushing. Thanks guys. Ron.

This may or may not help as I'm not sure how you have been trying to adjust the sender unit arm. On some sender replacements, one must adjust/shorten the arm length so that the range (arc) of the arm movement is increased. Also, I seem to remember that the guage indicator should rise to the "full" reading when the ignition is turned off (?)

Ron, if you still have your original sending unit, it can be repaired and will work much better than the current aftermarket ones.

The original Ford sending units are not resistance units, they work by balancing the current in the sending unit and gauge. The sending unit has a bi-metal strip with a heating wire wound around it. The gauge has a similar bi-metal strip that is used to move the needle. The arm in the tank changes the time that the contacts are closed. The resistance in the sending unit and the gauge are always the same, close to 0 ohms. I have attached a photo of the inside of an original sending unit.

I don't know the correct resistance to read empty on the gauge, but if yours does not read empty when out of the tank, send the unit back.
