  Greetings All,

Can anyone identify the year(s) for the two shocks
in the attached image. Note the difference in the
machined edge around the top and differences in the
casting.

  What is the distance between the mounting holes?

  More information on the Shocks:

Both shocks have the same mounting dimensions, 4-3/8 (4.375) center to center of the mounting holes.

The stamping on the bottom of Shock "1" is as follows:
"P1932 E" with the "E" being obviously stamped separately.

I do not have shock "2" with me but I will get it
tomorrow. I do know that it has numbers stamped on
the top bosses (1,2,3,etc). If you look at the attached image of the top of shock '2', you will see an '8' stamped on one of the bosses. All the bosses have numbers stamped on them.

I have some early shocks, like 37 to 41, they measure 4 inch between the mounting stud holes,on front shocks, and 4 1/4 for the rear shocks,
I assume you have the 42 to 47 maybe 48 front shocks,
I am not a expert on the later FORDS,
I do not know when FORD went to the tube shocks, I know that 49 had them,
hope this helps,
if the ones you have do not work, you can snd out to have rebuilt,
this is a job for a skilled person with the correct tools, there are a few people that do this,
you can try adding oil,to them and pump them up and see what happens,
I have had good success with motorcycle fork oil,come in many different weights, try the ligher weight, and not enough resistence, empty out and go to heavier weight oil.
just check the V8 TIMES, or HEMMINGS MOTOR NEWS,for a rebuilder,if you have problems,

  Thanks for the reply, 37RAGTOPMAN.
Both shocks have been rebuilt. They came off an early
46. One is Front Left and the other Front Right. Shock 1 seems to be the original style as the 46 service manual photo(s) show this style. Question is why the two different styles, could one of them have been replaced,
and maybe came from a truck or different manufacturer?
Just getting picky during a restoration!

  Maybe when the guy was installing them at the FORD factory,did not compare the 2 so they might not match,
remember it is a FORD,
These were probably taken out of a big box of them,
also maybe you are right,maybe one had a problem and was replaced over the years,
it has been a few years,like 62
also the judges can only see one side of the car at a time, if you do not say anything, I won't

I heard a story, about a FORD ASSMEBLEY plant in about 1952, were they assembled a sedan,
one side had 1 door, and the other side had 2 doors,
this was supposed to be a true story,

  We are working on a very early 46. It is great fun comparing both side of the car, obvious that each side was done by a different worker. Spot welds on one-side are great, other side looks like the welder was on his first day at Ford!
We are leaving all that alone to preserve history!
