Topic: Horns

Took the trumpet horns off my 46 for cleaning and refurbishing as only one seemed to be blowing. As suspected the points were corroded, so I used a small file to clean them. Wired direct from battery for testing, but only one still seems to be operating, and not very loud. Anyone know what the point gap should be, as I changed both in cleaning. I'm reluctant to dismantle that part involving the diaphragm, for fear of really scr*w*ng things up.

Thanks.

  Bill,

The point gap should be set so that the points close with the horn armature in the inactive position.

When testing the horns use at least a 12 gauge jumper wire directly from the 6 volt NEG terminal of the battery and another 12 gauge wire directly from the POS terminal of the battery to the horn body for ground.

You should have about .060 movement of the armature to get a good sound.
