I have a friend who has 40 Ford that has a 39 windshield that he removed when the glass was cracked, all the hardware for the 39 windshield where it attached to the car was there as it was when built. Is it possible Ford installed it as a left over part? The car is a 40 Deluxe in all other built features. SID

Sid, I doubt that Ford ever installed the 39 windshield on a 1940 car. Someone in the past probably installed the 1940 parts on a 1939 Deluxe body. Tom

I am tending to agree with Tom. Is it possible to access the transmission floor cover? If so, I'd like a measurement from it. Then, we will know if it is '39 body.

Page 151 of "The V8 Album" shows a '40 Ford Fordor with a '39 windshield. Perhaps you have found a prototype.

The prototype theory is interesting and I suppose at least, a slight possibility. However, the prototype cars were typically destroyed AND there were so many differences between them and an actual production car, I am 99.9% certain, the car being questioned would have many obvious oddities. The original poster, "Buddy" describes this car as "The car is a 40 Deluxe in all other built features".

What makes you believe the W/S was 39 was it the date code on the glass bug? If so production of 1940 Fords started in 1939 and early 40 Fords would have glass dated 39. Does the car have a W/S that opens, by a knob on the dash and hinges above the W/S?

I find it odd that there no holes filled where the windshield wipers would have been on a 39 ,also that some one would go to all the trouble to change over to a 40, when years ago they were easy to come by. SID

If you'd like to put this to a reasonable "rest" then pull up the floor mat and measure the transmission pan. That will allow me to tell you if the body is a '39 or a '40. There are other telltale signs but the floor pan is the easiest to discern. I find it extremely difficult to believe you have a 39 body there unless someone changed it or modified the '40 body. While I agree with you that parts were plentiful and cheap "back then" you must understand that these cars were practically worthless for decades and as such repairs were often done with the cheapest parts available. I have seen numerous '40 Fords with '39 front clips and vice-versa. While both clips were surely readily available, apparently one was easier to get hold of and / or cheaper. Go pull the mat, measure the pan and we can make practical sense of your inquiry.

Sid, The reason that I doubt that the factory installed a crank out windshield on a 1940 car, is that Ford wanted to show the car as ALL new. If the windshield wipers are mounted on the cowl, they would not work very well with a crank out windshield. This leads me to believe that the windshield was installed on a 1940 body after the car was sold. One of my high school buddies did put a 40 front clip on a 39 Deluxe in 1949. He had unfortunate meeting with a deer and damaged all of the front sheet metal. The junk yard had a 40 Deluxe sedan with a good front clip, so the front clip was installed on the 39 Deluxe. It still had the other 39 features, but they could have been changed. If you could attach some photos, it would be interesting to see the car. Tom
