Visually, are there obvious differences between '49 & '50 Ford passenger car exteriors.

'49 had external gas cap and crank door handles, while the '50 had a hidden gas cap and push button door handles. Think the parking lights were different, too. I'm sure others will chime in.

A major difference - 49 has letters on the hood nose saying "FORD" the 50 has a crest emblem. Also the parking lights and ends of the grille are different.

And the trunk handle changed from chrome to a painted part with downturned ends

Bob, the bumper guards are bulbous for '49, skinny with ribs for '50.

On a 49 the center grille bar tapers at the end and becomes the parking lights. On a 50 the parking lamps have housings below the center grille bar. There arre many other sdmall differences. If you purchase the V-8 Club's 49-51 restoration manual or the V-8 Album you will get a good education on these cars. Both books can be purchased on the front page of this site.

For a quick identification of '49 vs '50 I look at the trunk lid... The '50 had a "hood" over the handle/lic plate, where-as the '49 did not have the hood.
Of course if the car has been altered, customized, the deck lid hood/handle was usually the first to go.

On this web site pull up the "GALLERY" section and some of the differences will show in the pictures. As I remember the 49's had chrome dash knobs whereas the 50's had plastic knobs.

In addition to the items mentioned by others, the grills may look the same but the only part that is the same is the curved part in the center under the hood over the bullet.

Flatbob, The hood ornament on the 50 ford is a representation of a spining propeller; the 49 is of an airplane jet engine.
