Topic: carburetor rebuild kits

I remember reading somewhere that the common kits have a badly designed econimizer valve that promotes flooding and raw gas? I have a chandler groves on my 39 and it seems to have this purported problem since the recent rebuild. Is there one recommended kit that solves the issue? Thanks!

Parrish, If you have the Ford 91-99 type carburetor, I would recommend calling Daytona Parts for a quote on a re-build kit. I got a Ford 94-59 kit from them last fall, and it is the most complete kit I've found. It comes with a correct power valve, without the common cast radius on the power valve flange that causes so many problems. It aslso contains new idle needle screws and springs, the correct accelerator pump and new link, needle valve, plus all gaskets. It's a real quality kit.

Now, when my garage warms up to at least 40 degrees, I'll take the carb off the car and use the kit

Refer to a recent article in the V8 TIMES regarding the modification of the power valve shank to provide a suitable gasket mating surface. Many of the carb kits we have seen have serious quality deficiencies, such as weak accelerator pump springs, etc. Careful inspection of old parts, and reuse of many of them is recommended. Gaskets are usually OK, but much of the rest is junk.

thanks guys...I remember reading the article and will review it. I also send a request to Daytona Parts to get their take on the economizer valve snafu. I'll check another parts carb I have, but I think it is a Stromberg. My Chandler is also missing the throttle lever (on the driver side) and they always seem to be missing on old carbs!

Last year, I had to buy a whole intake and carb assembly at a swap meet to get a good set of throttle and choke levers. They may be available as replacement parts, but I haven't found a source.

Bob, Vintage Speed carries the Hand Throttle lever, spring, and cap for the Holly/Ford 94s. They have them with the ball end type, or the cable type. Vintage Speed also carries a full line of rebuild parts and kits. I've used their online catalog to order in the past, and have had very good service.

Thanks, Don. I'll put that in our file. I only paid twenty bucks for the manifold and carb. Our supply of old Ford parts has dwindled as we pick it over. That new 94 carb sounds fine, and the price is not out of line compared to others. As time passes, I assume the term "carburetor" will become a curiosity.

Speedway Motors also sells a kit with the correct power valve. The kit is not as complete as the kit from Daytona Parts, but if you just need new gaskets and power valve, it is a very good kit with quality gaskets.

Would someone mind posting the date the article regarding Carb Rebuilding & Rebuild Kits Gaskets appeared the the Early Ford V-8 Times? I don't remember reading it or even seeing it and would like to read it. Thanks!
