Our '51 convertible has staining on the very front of the top, where the Lebaron Bonney fabric lays on the steel header. I suspect that surface rust is developing underneath. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a gentle cleaning product that can be safely used as a cleanser? The top was apparently installed in the late nineteen seventies. It looks like canvas to me.

Hi Everyone, Grant, I use Woolite for cleaning bird poop off my '36 Phaeton's top. Since these are small, I mix up small amount, and use a new sponge. That's what I can add. -VT/JeffH

Grant, give Lebaron Bonney as call and ask them what they recommend. They have many years of experience with the canvas tops. Tom

Thank you, gentlemen. Jeff......next time we go to the city, Woolite will be on the shopping list. TomO ......great idea. Should have thought of that myself. I'll call them and let Forum know what their advice is.

Update ......... Woolite appears to have disappeared from stores in this area. If I can find a retailer who still sells that product, it will be tested on one of the brown spots on our top. This morning I discussed the staining problem with Jen at LeBaron Bonney. She thinks that a solution of mild soap like dish detergent mixed with warm water might work. Jen also recommended a product called Ragtop Cleaner which they sell for $13.95 a can. It is designed for cleaning the canvas convertible tops that LeBaron Bonney sells. I've ordered two cans, and will post the results of using Ragtop Cleaner on this Forum.

Great site, Tom. Thanks for passing it on. Those are great instructions for proper care of convertible tops. Very thorough. I certainly haven't been looking after mine as recommended. Maybe other EFV8 Club members would benefit from this advice as well.

TomO, Thanks very much for tracking down that information. Good stuff! I'll read it a second and third time. I think I'll contact LB and see what kind of material I've got (I didn't buy the kit, Dad did).
