Topic: Adjustable Tappets in V8-60

carcrazy    -- 03-01-2010 @ 9:39 AM
Is any additional machine work required to a V8-60 engine cylinder block to install adjustable tappets? Do the valve stems have to be ground to shorten their length? Will new stock valve springs handle the increased inertial loads of the heavier tappets with a stock camshaft if engine speed is limited to 5000 RPM?
Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Most adjustable tappets fit without modification. If you can't get the correct clearance, you may have to shorten the stems, but that would be unusual. We always install new valve springs. Modern adjustable tappets work fine, and usually don't float. However, 5,000 RPM is high for any flathead, as the best power band is about half that. V8 60's used to spin that fast in midget racers, but engine life wasn't long.
