Can someone please tell me what type of oil to use in a flatmotor with free floting bearings?
The manual states 40wt in the summer.

Any quality motor oil will work fine in your car. The 20w-40 would be fine for summer. If you are burning oil, you can use the 20W-50.

I use 10W-30 in my car.

  Non-detergent 30 wt or 40 wt oil.

I haven't had any luck finding the 40 wt lately,so I just bought a case of 30 wt for my flat 6 from the local NAPA store.

Some of you in farm country may be able to buy 40w non-detergent oil from your farm co-op. Also a great place to buy heavy duty 6 and 8 volt batteries.

Do NOT use modern high detergent oil unless your engine has been rebuilt and you know for a fact there is no sludge in it for the detergents to break loose.

The myth about detergent oils causing sludge to come loose and plug the oil lines dies hard.

The detergents just keep the sludge from forming and do not attack the built up sludge. Detergents have been in the oil since the early 1950s, so most engine have run with them at some time in the past.

The only 30 wt non detergent oil that I could find at NAPA is air compressor oil. It is not suited for gasoline engines as it is not designed to be used at the high temperatures in a gasoline engine.

20-50 Amsoil Synthetic. WIX filter. Started with Mobil1 in 1976 when we got Bertha, switched to Amsoil 10 years ago.

The Safety wire is still on the hood hinges....no re-builds, never a problem.
