Topic: '46-'48 Typical Touring/Trip Probs

Requesting input from '46-'48 driver owners (and seasoned EFV8 1940+ model year driver veterans) of typical/most common problems (mechanical, electrical, etc.) encountered during your longer trips (100 miles+) that left you in need of parts &/or repairs. Also am interested in your thoughts on fire extinguishers (type, style, size, brand) and mounting locations and processes.

Finalizing a minimalist spare parts and tools package for upcoming trips this summer and greatly appreciate all responses. Thanks in advance -

Steve

  Steve,

All of the flatheads have the same needs and the same parts are likely to fail. I have slowed down my travels recently, but I expect to drive my 40 over 2,000 miles this year and my 53 about 1,500. In my younger days, I averaged over 4.000 miles a summer in my 40.

I carry:

Under the back seat a spare fuel pump, coil, head light bulb, distributor, carburetor, generator. water pumps and a couple of valves with guides.

In the trunk, voltage regulator, fuel pump, round coil with adapter, rebuilt coil with condenser, condenser, tail light bulb, trouble light that plugs into the lighter, flash light, bottle jack, scissors jack and a full set of tools (1/2 drive socket set, 3/8 drive socket set, 1/4 inch socket set, 2 sets of combination wrenches, set of screwdrivers, variety of pliers, ball peen hammer, analog meter, and nylon pry tools). I also carry cleaning supplies, I carry touch up paint when I am going to show the car.

Over the years (more than 30), I have used the voltage regulator 3 times, the fuel pump 2 times, spare coil 5 times (less often since I have had the coil rebuilt), condenser 2 times and the water pumps 2 times (to replace freshly rebuilt pumps). This is both local and long distance tours.

I carry a dry chemical extinguisher under the front seat of all of my collector cars.

I have loaned out parts to others on tours, so I carry much more than is necessary. Minimum I would carry a coil, condenser and a fuel pump. I would carry the tools needed to replace these parts and a set of heavy duty jumper cables.

Thanks Tom for your very good and thorough response as well as sharing your experiences. Exactly what I was looking for. Packing the car for the drive to Charlotte/Eastern and then on to the mountains afterward so your reply really helps.

Saw the pics of your Mercury & Lincoln under another discussion - both absolutely beautiful (have seen the Merc before but not that pic). If I recall from reading the forum your Lincoln is a Rouge class winner in all three categories - what a great find that is for you! Hope to meet and see you and one or both of your cars at another meet in the future that is more accessible for us both.

Thanks again Tom -

I drive my 47 Fordor daily, 12,000 miles per year including road trips. I've done 23 road trips over 500 miles each in the last 5 years. Here's the last one with links at the end to all others that you can actually read the story of what mechanical problems we've had. http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166241

I could list all of the spare parts and tools I carry with me on the trips but you asked what mechanical problems we've actually had so I list those and you can concoct your list of what to take from that.

I have had problems with the generator (spare brushes would be good but once I actually needed a spare generator),

overheating so carry water,

belts breaking so carry spare belts,

heater hose popping so carry spare of those,

many flat tires, most which I just pumped up with the rechargeable pump and drove to tire store for repair but needed spare tubes which no one carries so carry several of those,

lots of vapor lock before I installed electric backup fuel pump so install one of those,

windshield wipers flying off so take some spares of those,

have run out of gas so carry some extra of that,

had to be towed once so carry my AAA card,

got stuck in the snow once so carry a tow strap,

broke the latch on the hood once and had to duct tape the hood down so carry duct tape,

lots of dead batteries so carry heavy duty jumper cables, a jump starter, and battery charger.

That's all I can remember from past road trips. Hope it helps.

I forgot to add that the most common problem on maiden voyages is loose nuts and bolts. They can also show up on Spring Tours. Check all fasteners that you have touched since the last long drive.
