Topic: 1950 Ford/Mercury Trans Differences?

Are there any differences between 1950 Ford and Mercury Overdrive transmissions? How do you identify each?

Trying to help someone out and this stuff is too new for me.

All help will be appreciated and passed on to a guy in need.

Thank you.

The ford and Merc trans mount to the bellhousing different. The Merc trans is round in the front. You would need the ring type bellhousing to mount the Merc trans to the 8-BA Ford block.

I have dug out my May 1950 Master Repair Manual for overdrive transmissions which was intended for use by the dealerships' Service Departments.

According to the exploded diagrams at Figure 1, 3, 33 and 34, there are many differences between the Ford and Mercury O/D transmissions.

Also, to compound matters, convertibles with overdrive apparently had the solenoid mounted differently.

From what I can see, the Mercury transmission is longer and looks bigger and heavier overall.

I don't have a scanner, and my computer skills are technopeasant at best, but these diagrams should be easy to photograph. Maybe I can make the Image Attachment function work here on the Forum. Would you like to see the detailed factory illustrations ?

Thank you for the help. Kept searching the net until I finally found pictures.

More different than I expected.

Thank you again.
