What does it take to replace the regulator gear on a 1949 ford conv. quarter window. Does it involve welding?

I'm not familiar with the 49 regulator, but most of those gears are riveted or spot welded in place. There is a guy who advertises in the V-8 Times named "Regulator Roy". You might call him as he may be able to answer the question or have a new regulator.
