...from those of you who have installed the voltage regulator manufactured by 'Fun Projects' - http://www.funprojects.com/products/10505v.aspx - This is a solid state device used to replace the cutout relay used on 3 brush generators but is claimed to be an actual voltage regulator. It looks identical to the original cutout as supplied by Ford but is it truly a voltage regulator? Is it a viable replacement for the cutout relay?

It works better than the cutout.

I just installed one on my 1934, following all instructions exactly. It is not a cure-all for a bad electrical/charging system. First I made sure that I had a properly working generator with a third brush which responded correctly to amperage adjustments. I had previously installed a new battery, accurate amp gauge, all new wiring and I made sure that all connections were bright and tight. The product seems to work exactly as advertised and so far I am very satisfied. I have several items from Fun Projects and have found them to work well and be of high quality.

I have had one for some time and found that when I tightened one of the electrical terminals (10-32 screw) it stripped. I had to take the regulator apart and install nuts inside. It is truly a regulator and will maintain battery voltage and then cause the generator to charge only to the extent that load is placed on the battery. So some time, after starting the car, the cars ammeter will go to zero and stay there (because battery load and generator output are equal). Another problem area is the mounting tabs for the two screws into the generator body. The open type mounting holes spread apart the metal. I soldered washers under the mounting and corrected this problem. The problems I have had are all mechanical, the electrical part of the regulator works well.
