Mine is 36 woodie after market light but it has a wire bail around the light. something like a snap ring.

Roger is right. My original 38 dome light also uses a snap ring around the lens. Just be careful not to poke into the white plastic lens, as it is quite fragile. A small pick works well to work one end of the snap ring out, and then you can grasp the free end and rotate the ring out of its' groove in the metal housing. Dan-also in Iowa.

Plastic, the dome light on my '46 is glass? Did Ford change from plastic to glass because they were too fragile?

Loren Sorenson's Famous Ford Woodies book is probably the definitive answer, so I'll check that out. The early wagon's used the same dome light assy. as several other contemporary Ford body styles. I believe the light assembly was unchanged through the years, but the lens may have been improved. The early lens was a thin, molded opaque plastic that only 38FordV8 (our in-house plastics guru),can properly attest to. I will say that having dealt with 3 38 woodies, this lens becomes about as structurally sound as an eggsh*ll.

Thanks for your help, found the retaining ring and was able to get it out, getting it back in was a little work. My lens was glass.
