Topic: 32 sub rail replacement

Can someone give me the ABCs of replacing the subrails? The passenger side is bad due to the rear window tube missing for many years. The process seems a lot more difficult than pulling the body with the subrails intact, right? I plan to tack cross supports at the A and B pillars, but what about the trunk area? Not having the subrail cross channels attached also seems dangerous. Thanks for any help!

Brace the body from different directions and in different locations. Crossbrace (X pattern) at the cowl, the rear of the door jambs and the trunk area where the original braces are located. Also run braces from the front door jamb to the back door jamb about mid door. Replace the sub rail with the body on the frame.

Wait a minute, I'm confused. Isn't the body attached to the subrail? How do I replace the subrail with the body attached to the frame?

The subrail is attached to the frame. Support the body on each end, remove the old subrail and replace with the new one by placing it on the frame. Leaving the body on the frame helps maintain alignment of the doors etc. Make all your adjustments to the body on the frame before welding. If you weld up things with the body off the frame you will find it very difficult to line up when it is put back on the frame.
