  my son has a 37 that had a 60 hp engine, changing to 85 hp. will the 60 hp radiator work or are they different. what other changes besides motor mounts? thanks tom

  The 60HP radiator is different than the 85 Hp radiator.

  Unless you live in the Arctic, You will probably want to replace the radiator, as the 85 radiator has more cooling capacity. You will also need an 85 transmission, as the 60 transmission has a different mounting bell that only fits the 60 block. You may also want to swap-out the rear axle gears, as the 60's were often equipped with 4.44:1 or 4:11:1 ratio's which are fairly low gears.
An 85 is generally much happier driving a 3.78:1 final drive ratio. This conversion has been done a lot of times.

  The 60 hp radiator capacity is only 15 quarts and the 85 hp is 22 quarts. The front 60 hp engine mount was actually an adaption over the 85 hp mounting area,remove the rivets and plates and there it is.

  thanks for the info-- do you guys know if i could just use the 60 hp and get it recored with a thicker core or are the dimensions wrong? thanks tom

  You would have to change the inlet and outlets on top and bottom tank if they could even be used as they are smaller diameter,1 1/4" I believe. I would start with a 85 hp radiator (actually I did this),you do not want to mess around putting together a radiator that is going to be about 3/8" from a fan blade. Something else that may help you find a radiator is the 38 and the 39 Standard radiator will fit,the designation on it 81A was actually the Ford parts replacement for the 37 Ford 85 hp. When I was looking for an 85 hp radiator and I wanted a NOS one I could not find a 78 prefix one that a 1937 Ford came with originally,any NOS ones seemed to be the 81A so Ford must have stopped supplying the 78 very early on and went with the 38-39 Standard one. I don't know what type of cap is used on the 78A radiator but the 81A takes the 4lb cap which is nice to keep coolant in. Some later Fords like the 39 Deluxe had a non pressure cap I think.
