I have a forty flathead with a Mallory Electronic distributor. About every year ( maybe 2,000miles )I have to change the cap and button because of a build-up on the eight copper places inside the cap. Does everyone have this problem and are there any solutions? It is a 12v system and the car runs great until i need to change the cap and button. I have cleaned them with emery cloth and re-intalled them but I'm not sure how good that is. It has the 'crab' type cap.

Jack, I use a "pencil" type wire brush with brass bristles. I think emery cloth might be too abrasive.
