Topic: steering sector ID

hardtop25    -- 03-11-2015 @ 12:23 PM
My project is '36 Ford 1/2 ton pickup. steering unit is stamped 48-3550 08. (the 2nd numeral 5 is obscured so is a guess). also a 'iron cross' looking place holder between main # and the 08. it does not appear to match up to frame mounting bracket, which is not attached to frame. I've ID'd my frame as '36 and have '35-'36 book. my very complete parts inventory seems to be a 'hodge-podge' of later model stuff. Thanks.

what is the make and model associated with an early Ford steering sector with a marking stamped on the main housing 48-3550 08?

Ford often sold assemblies, the associated parts were assembled and sold together as one part number. The individual parts did have part numbers but do not show up in Fords Chassis Parts books, because the individual parts were not sold by themselves (brake drums and hubs..etc) For the most part the 48 part number prefix was used on parts that were first used in 35. The part number may be carried over to later years. The 35 main steering box is identical to the 36 and has the same part number. The sector housing is different with the bore increased to accept needle bearings in stead of the 35 sector bushings and it has a 68 prefix. So the main box you have should bolt to the 35 frame bracket. It seems some people have changed to the later 37 steering box, in order to do this the frame bracket is changed to the 37 bracket. Not all, but some, of the 1937 brackets have a large 78 stamped into their face. Your frame may have been modified to the later bracket.
