Hello, I am piecing back together my 37 after 40+ years of storage, not too surprising that I have forgotten where many of the pieces go and how they assemble, but am working through it. My question is about what I think is a mounting plate/bracket for the spare tire. In back of the passenger's seat on the side wall is a piece of wood that runs from the B pillar to a vertical piece of wood about halfway back. It is mounted via two small angle brackets. There is another bracket about a 1/3 way back on this piece of wood. There are two 1/4" machine screws that hold the bracket to the wood. The bracket is L shaped. In my case the bracket appears to be mangled and not quite 90 degree bend, see attached pics. Should this bend be a clean 90 degrees??? If so, I should be able to pound it into the correct bend. Thanks.

oops, my bad. The bracket in question is not 90 degrees. It is flat (or at least should be?)

Honestly, I don't know where this piece would mount. I rebuilt my 37 Delivery about 20 years ago from a body I picked up in a junk yard in about 1975. I don't remember much under the skin. Your description of the stringers fits with my recollections as they were the basis for the flat masonlite type board which made up my side walls. You may be able to make out the horizontal and vertical screws used to fasten the board to the interior framing. Also note the "bump" on the rear of the spare tire cover.

So on the back inside of the spare tire cover is a wooden wedge. It locks the back of the spare tire against the bulge on the spare tire cover. I can't remember if it scr*w*d directly to the wood or if there was a metal bracket behind the wood. I don't know why the metal piece would be as large as yours unless it also tied the vertical and horizontal wood framing together.

In the front there is a metal bracket on the outside of the vertical paneling. It uses two long flat head machine screws to hold it in place so it either has cap screws in the vertical frame work or another plate with fine threaded holes for the machine screws. This plate holds the mechanism to lock in the spare tire. I did not originally have this piece (shown in the green bible on page 10) so made up an L shaped piece to lock the spare tire in place This message was edited by juergen on 3-8-15 @ 11:52 AM

I did finally locate this piece and it and the bracket scr*w*d into the front vertical piece are shown below. Hope this helps as this is an amateur rebuild not worth to be called a restoration

Wow, there is a lot more for me to learn about the spare tire mounting. These pics and info are very helpful indeed. I don't have any of the parts in your pics and it is only getting harder to locate such things, ugh. Thanks again for your help. My attachment shows the wood frame pieces and in the middle left area is the bracket I was wondering about. It is held in place with two 1/4" machine screws and has a caged 1/4" nut, probably to further attach some of the spare tire mounting stuff.

I think you are referring to the piece about a foot down from the top rail and a foot in from the B pillar. This is for attaching the tab at the top front of the spare tire cover. Good luck on your project. You are right, I got much of this stuff when Hemmings was one of the few resources on these parts from hot rodders selling extraneous parts. They come up now when some collector's dad dies.

I don't know much about the commercial vehicles, but I thought that the Sedan Delivery had the spare stored inside the vehicle like this 38 Standard. http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/ford/courier/1567941.html?refer=blog The photos posted by juegen seem to show the external spare mounted on the outside of the vehicle. I thought that this mounting was used on the Panel Delivery. Tom

Hi Tom, Thanks for the 38 link, the pics should help me during my restoration. The first pic that juergen posted shows that the tire is located on the inside behind the passenger seat, so it is inline with the 38 pic, just on the opposite side, at least that is how I perceive it to be.

The most extensive original internal pictures of the 37 Sedan Delivery that I have seen are in Francis and DeAngelis book "The Early Ford V-8 as Henry Built It". Look at the 35-36 section also as Briggs built essentially the same body from 35-39 and the paneling is clearly shown. You could even get a rear door spare tire mount. Sorensen's book "The Classy Ford V8" also shows this but no details.
