Topic: 1940 Radio- Philco or Zenith

  What are the basic differences between the 2 radios & are they "Ford /script? Any pictures would be helpful; thank you

  The basic difference is the aesthetics.
The Zenith has a deeper case and as such required a "groove" of sorts to allow clearance for the cowl vent mechanism.
They were installed randomly upon the assembly line. In other words, whatever brand was next to the line got installed.

  The main difference between the 2 radios is the method of controlling the tuning.

The Philco F174o used a string to move the controls and the Zenith 6MF-490 used gears to move the the tuning controls.

I have seen more Zenith radios for sale than Philco and they seem to be easier to repair.
