Is there a lube / sealant used on the 59ab water pump gasket?

A thin sealant is a good idea applied to both sides of the gasket. Be certain to avoid covering the oil passage hole.

If both water pump and block surfaces are perfectly clean and flat, no sealer is needed, I always coat the gasket with a thin film of grease, plus a little in the bolt holes just to be safe. I do the same on thermostat housings. It makes them easier to remove in the future without a lot of cleaning and scr*ping. I learned this trick from an old timer back in the 50s.
