Topic: Clutch Replacement

  I am planning to replace the clutch in my 1939 Deluxe Tudor. I have read in the Forum that the spring force exerted by the pressure plate should be relieved before unbolting the pressure plate from the flywheel. There is also discussion about this in the Service Bulletins where a special spring compressor tool is described and illustrated for this purpose. Lacking such a tool, how is the pressure relieved? Is there a way to block the release levers and compress the springs?

If one is careful to maintain an even load on the bolts attaching the assembly to the flywheel and avoid distortion, is the load relief necessary?

  I use wooden wedges. There is no need for a special tool. It is not necessary to do this when removing the pressure plate, just when installing it. When you remove the plate, turn each bolt 2 turns and then move on to the next until all pressure is removed from the disc.

  Larry, I would send your old clutch
out to Ft. Wayne clutch in Indiana.
They will rebuild to original specs or
to your specs if different. Don't buy a new
clutch as the are all made in china and
are inferior to a proper rebuild.
