Putting together a 36 rear axle assembly and its all together and trying to adjust the gear backlash of .003 to.008. It takes quite a bit of effort to turn the pinion . Was wondering how tight it should be?? Was following a alternate method for gaskets from the fordbarn website ,I believe. Thanks for info.

One of the first adjustments necessary is the rotation of the pinion, no ring gear in place, pinion in housing. Use a torque wrench with a pointer and a socket on the pinion spline adjust the 1-7/8 double nut so the torque necessary to turn the pinion is 12-17 inch/pounds. There are 12 inch pounds in one foot pound. Shoot of the high end of the middle of the range about 15"/#. Lock the adj in with the second nut and peen over the lock plate. gasket Shims on the housings both sides about 0.008" the shims on the RH housing are for carrier end play on the LH are for pinion back lash. Do carrier end play and finally the pinion back lash. When doing back lash if you remove shim from the LH to decrease back lash you have to add the same thickness to the RH side so carrier end play does not change. My book indicates the back lash is 0.006- .010" for 36

Here is an article on rebuilding a banjo rear that was posted on the H.A.M.B. I bookmarked this and refer to it from time to time when working on these rears. This may be of some help to you.
