Topic: Sealing Vinyl Roof Insert

My 35 coupe roof insert has never leaked and is in good shape but I cringe every time I wash it hoping no water bypasses the seal and stains the headliner.

Is there a clear drying wax or sealant that can be used to help provide an additional external moisture barrier without it being an apparent eye sore?

Thanks for entertaining my silly question....

If you applied sealer to the edge of the top material, paying particular attention to the tack heads, before installing the trim, it should not leak. If it does, you may be able to pull the trim and redo it, depending on the type of trim material. We have begun to use the new Meguire " hydrophobic" wax. It causes water to bead and run off the finish. I don't know if it will help, but it does great on the rest of the car. Spritz it on and immediately wipe it off. Doesn't turn white, and can be used in the sun.

Replaced the top insert in my 36 5w in 1973 and I remember it being held in with a rubber seal that fit into the big groove ? Not the tack strip like 33-34 ? Only did the one and that car has been gone since 1977 . Anywayz if my memory is right on this you should have nothing to worry about . The cloth insert itself can be covered with " top dressing " but I wouldn't do that until it was checking or cracking . Now on 33-34 with the tack strip setup I have found black seam sealer to be helpful with leaks on them . But again if I am right about the big rubber snap in molding on 35-36 you should have nothing to worry about . Dave
