I've just got a 41 Ford Super Deluxe coupe that was built for and ran in several of the Great Races. I was told that it had a 100HP block but there are no casting numbers on the bell housing to identify it. The water inlets are on the center of the heads. The heads have a casting mark "A". The distributer is a crab style with 2 bundles of plug wire , one coming out each side. Anybody have an idea of what I am working with This message was edited by hemi on 1-23-15 @ 11:34 AM

As your block has no ID on the bell that would have indicated a 59 series block, then it may be a '41 Merc block, which I'm told could have been ordered in the 41 Ford. The two bundle plug wires in a V pattern cap would be a simple conversion from the correct crab style of your year Ford. Alan

so the 59 engine did not have a number on the bell housing? How about the heads being marked with only an "A" - any idea what they are for?

The 59 series engines had a very large number 59 on the bell. There were always some casting numbers that mean nothing today. The A heads, you will find also have a number 81A 6049 or 6050 cast into the top edge. It does sound like a correct engine, as I said, special order Merc 100 hp, available for the Ford. There is no external difference between the 85, 95 and 100 HP engine in the pre-WWII era. The easiest way to determine the HP is to remove the heads and measure the bore. The 95 and 100 HP engine had a 3 3/16" bore and the 85 HP engine had a 3 1/16" bore. The 39-40 95 HP engines had a 99T stamped on the machined surface where the intake manifold mounts. The 41 Mercury engine did not have this as the casting was changed and there is a raised area for the intake manifold. These engines were originally painted blue to identify them as different from the green painted 85 HP engines. Tom

I found the part number on the heads - it is 81A-6049A. The top of the engine appears to not have a raised area that the intake bolts to. It looks to be flat. This message was edited by hemi on 1-25-15 @ 11:44 AM
