Topic: 1940 Ford Transmission Case

Located on top of my 1940 Ford transmission case, near the front is a cap that sticks up about a 1/4 inch and has "SW" on top. Does this serve as a vent to the transmission? Thanks again for all your help.

The early 40 transmission has a cast boss (part of the case) running up the transmission toward the inspection cover. At the top of the boss was a small hole. This was the early vent. Later in 40 the stamped steel vent was pressed into a hole in the case. This type of stamped steel vent lasted for several years.

Actually all transmission cases for 1940 had the integral (cast in)vent. That later design mentioned previously did not come about until after 1940.
The picture contained herein depicts the proper vent (casting) for 1940.
