Topic: Grease Guns

Well what I "thought" was going to be fairly simple job hasn't neccessarily worked out that way. For some reason, the grease gun that I purchased at my local cars parts store is not putting grease into the zerk fittings in my 46. I checked and confirmed the zerks were not plugged. For some odd reason, when I put the coupling over the fitting and give a few squeezes from the handle, grease just spews out from around the coupling. Since this is my first time doing this on my own, maybe I am overlooking something. Does it take a special type of grease gun for these old cars? Thanks for any assistance.

You just have to get the grease gun squarely and securely on the fitting. When you pump the gun it causes the gun to seal on the fitting. This problem is common.

I agree with Richard. It isn't unusual to find fittings (zerks) that refuse to accept grease. Most fittings have a spring loaded ball inside that is designed to keep the grease from coming back out. These can jam from dirt, etc. Replacement fittings are usually available from parts places in assortments. Just unscrew the old and screw in the new ones. The original fittings years ago had a conical shape and did require a special gun. The ball shape of the newer type allows, as said, for the gun to latch onto it and stay put as you crank the gun.
