  I just came into possession of *18-6883261*. That number is stamped into the frame so even an idiot (that's me) can't remain ignorant.

Is it the same with car code? That is, can it be found stamped into some body tag? Or do I figure it myself? It's pretty apparent that it has two doors (not four), and that it's a sedan (not a coupe), but Special, Deluxe, Super Deluxe - not so apparent when it was fashionable to remove badges and putty in holes during the 50's.

From your comments and these web pages it appears you should be able to narrow your car code down to 5-6 codes and from there use other differentiating model information and resources available on this site.

Not sure how you can hone this down to the exact model/car code by the serial number alone - perhaps our more seasoned experts can weigh in here. Car codes - have never seen them stamped anywhere on the limited vehicles I've seen or owned - not saying they were never specifically referenced or stamped though.

Do you have a title for the car? If so is the car code possibly referenced there?

  Welcome to the world before complicated VIN number and vehicle codes. The number you have is the engine serial number and was sequential from 18-1 in 1932 through at least the engines built in 1946 or 47. When the engine was assembled at the Rouge engine plant it was stamped on the top of the transmission case and when the engine was placed in the frame at an assembly plant it was transferred to the top of the frame.

In simpler times it was considered as all that was necessary to identify your vehicle. There is no code to it and no numbers that will identify your body style, color, trim group, or the assembly plant. Ford did not use body tags in those days. However bodies built by outside vendors for Ford may have had a body tag with a simple serial number. But outside vendors were probably not used in 42. The only exception that I know of were the station wagon bodies built at Ford's Iron Mountain plant. These have a body number sequential by year stamped in the metal cowl on the engine side of the firewall.

  You might want to buy the Club's 41-48 book, which has quite a bit of information about your 42 Ford.

The Super Deluxe cars had a 30 hour clock, wheel bands, arm rest on left door, assist cords to help the rear passengers exit the car, horn ring, spring covers and crank controls for the vent windows. Neither the Deluxe or Special cars had these features.

I just got the vehicle titled in Minnesota (I live in Colorado) but it's a new duplicate title and only has on it the information I gave them. My dad had this car in the quonset when he died in 2011 but we have been unable to find the original title or registration (and maybe keys are lost as well).

It's quite free of rust but the front body parts are partially disassembled because his younger brothers were putting a Cadillac engine and tranny in it back in the day and that project was never completed.

The front bumper is not on the car and I don't know offhand where it is.The driver's front fender has no "Super Deluxe" badge, and the hood also has no badge, but he was fond of de-badging cars and storing the badges carefully in a box somewhere. The back seat is piled high with junk, so badges and bumper could possibly be there.

The serial number indicates an original V-8, so it can't be a Special if my baby research is correct so far. My current guess would be a Deluxe. I'll check the other indicators, such as arm rest, as soon as possible. I got some good photos when I was up there last week.

I intend to get this 42 in the spring, and I have no reason to think that I can't get it running and rolling onto the trailer then. Clean tank, fresh gas, working fuel pump, good belts and hoses, a little DMV hassle, and I'll be driving this mousy beast to work, just like the 54 Olds Super 88 he also left me.
