Topic: new 1947 super deluxe

barrhavencobra    -- 12-29-2014 @ 5:27 PM
I just wanted to introduce myself as a new owner of a 1947 ford super deluxe. Also it is not running I hope to have it on the road in the spring. It seems in fairly good shape, I need to change points etc.

I was wondering what good books are recommended to assist me in getting it back on the road, not books on body repair but books on mechanical maintenance. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thank you in advance,

Jim

Here's my recommendations; The 41-48 Ford Service Bulletin book, a Chilton's Service Manual book that would cover the '46 model year, and lastly the 1941-48 Ford Book put out by the Early Ford V-8 Club. The Service Bulletin book can be found at most V-8 Ford parts vendors, sometimes on e-Bay and possibly Amazon. I would check e-Bay and Amazon for the Chilton's and the '41-48 book by the V-8 Club can be purchased right here on this site. If you are not a V-8 club member I would recommend that you join. The V-8 Times magazine has lots of great information and is well worth the price of the dues. You can also join right here on this site. Welcome to the forum.
Just for info there are two types of Service Bulletin Books. One is hardbound and one is soft cover. I prefer the soft cover and it is 81/2X11. The print is a little larger for us older Ford guys and it is about $20 vs $30 for the hardbound.

You don't have to be a member of the club to post. I'm not and I post.

This 46-48 service manual is one of my favorites: http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_mercury_early/service-manual-ford-mercury-and-lincoln-256-pages.html

And this one for refurbishing: http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_mercury_early/refurbishing-manual-for-early-ford-v8-cars-36-pages.html

And, of course, the Early Ford V8 Club's own definitive work regarding the 41-48: https://www.earlyfordv8.org/store-product-item.cfm?id=21&pid=2

Welcome from a fellow '47 Super Deluxe Owner (sedan coupe). I also recommend the books mentioned here including the Early Ford V8 book. You'll find many knowledgeable Forum posters here. They've been a great help to myself and many others.

  barrhavencobra,

Welcome to the Forum.

To get your car running, you will need good spark. I suggest that you send your distributor and coil to Skip Haney in FL to have the distributor serviced and the coil rebuilt.

The Ford distributor has dual points, where one set makes the circuit and the other breaks the circuit. The ignition timing is set by when the "break" set of points opens. This timing is done best on a distributor machine where the advance curve, cam wear and vacuum brake can also be check out.

Most old coils tend to break down under the heat generated during use. Having your coil rebuilt will give you many years of use.

Here is a link to Skip's website

If you need any other service tips,be sure to post your questions here. I am sure that you will get good answers as there are many helpful people answering questions on this forum.

Congradulations, You are the owner of model year that is, in my opinion, Henry's finest; in styling, performance, and desirability. I own a '48 coupe and it is the favorite of all my cars.Enjoy.

barrhavencobra .... Couldn't tell from your photo, is that a business or sedan coupe ? If it's a maroon sedan coupe I've got your twin here.

  Jim,

Nice looking car. It looks like a Fordor and one that is in very nice condition. I am sure that you will enjoy driving it.

I see the car has Ontario plates. Are you from Canada?

Tom

I'm thinking from his handle that Barrhavencobra may well live in Barrhaven, Ontario, a suburb of Ottawa. Yes?

barrhavencobra    -- 01-01-2015 @ 5:56 PM
Yes, we were in barrhaven Ontario, now we are a bit further out of Ottawa.
