  will too much piston ring end gap (maybe 1/8 inch) lower the flathead cylinder compression. Only 70lbs each now on recently assembled 24 stud engine with maybe 200 miles driven since installed.

  Definitely, it sounds like your rings are too small for the size of your bore.

  The specs call for a ring end gap of.014. More than this and you will get some compression blow by. Less than this and the rings may be too tight when the engine gets to operating temperature. Check every ring by placing it at the bottom of the bore and squaring it up by putting a piston down the bore.
