Can a crack in a cylinder bore in a 1939-40 V8 flathead block be repaired?
Thanks,
Chris

I have had several flathead engine cracks successfully repaired but the location of the crack is the deciding factor. Good engine rebuilder shops have used lace and pin techniques for years. They should be albe to tell you go/no-go on your engine. I have an 8ba right now that the bore was repaired with cast iron lace and pin. You can't even see the repair in the cylinder bore. Good luck.

Generally, any defect in the bore of a cylinder requires that it be bored and a sleeve installed. The size and position of the crack will determine whether it is advisable. We recently had an engine in our shop that had been sleeved, but apparently the defect was large, as an oversized sleeve was used. The engine failed due to a coolant leak that ruined the bearings. Without pulling the suspect sleeve, we noted that the lower edge of the sleeve was not sealed, and had seeped. There were signs that the engine had been frozen, as a large crack in the lower interior skirt had been pinned. It is likely that the suspect cylinder wall had a large hole from the same cause. Only close inspection by a competent shop can answer your question.
