Topic: Columbia-Quickchange?

I'm trying to "marry" a Columbia to a Halibrand quickchange. I have communicated with John Connelly, and he hasn't done this conversion, but John sent a photo of a conversion from a N.Y person. Does anyone have any history, or knowledge of this combination??? Thanks, any information would be greatly appreciated. email me at dccdeuce@charter.net

Like you, I've pondered this combination for a roadster project in the past. I don't see any physical reason that it wouldn't work, given the internal webbing on the Halibrand V8 QC is dimensionally consistent with a stock straddle-mount center section. You will end up with the Columbia on the opposite axle given that the Halibrand reverses the innards left to right. The question is what motivation other than showcasing the bizarre is in play. Yes, it will allow you to fine tune what range of axle ratios you wish to play with, but you will pay a price of noise (gear whine) in the process. Good conversation starter if you like to spend time talking....

Stroker, I feel I would have the best of both worlds, with the fun of running a low gear around town, and then not being shackled with swaping gears for the highway. I have seen a couple of photos of this conversion, so it can be done. I already have Columbia's in two of my 32's, with 4:11's, and it makes a nice combination of both areas of driving. I'm hoping someone on the V8 form has history on DOING this conversion. Thanks
