Topic: starter problem.

I have a 1946 59L (canadian) flathead. I cannot find a bendix that will not interfere with the flywheel. This is appeaently known but no one is addressing the problem. Both old style and new style units have this problem. I'm considering having the front cover of the starter machined to effectivly lengthen the armiture shaft to allow the bendix gear to clear the flywheel when it retracts. Any thopughts or help would be appreciated

Are you sure that you have a pre-8BA flywheel? The 8BA ring gear is 5/8" wide and the 32-48 ring gear is 7/8" wide.

Using the later flywheel with the earlier block and pan, can cause starter interference problems.

  Tom,
Thanx for the information. I realy can't be sure of anything except the block is Canadian and was originally in a 1.5 ton truck. this engine has an 11' clutch and that appears to be original to the flywheel. I installed a new ring gear 9112 tooth during the rebuild. I do not believe that it was greater than 5/8" thick. I have an old bendix that clears ok but still jambs. None of the new units clear the flywheel.

Here is a link to a thread on the Ford Barn. It shows the difference in the flywheels.

The 11" clutch was used on trucks from 1932-1953.

See if you can find the P/N for the ring gear that you had installed. That will help identify the flywheel.
