Topic: Gas tank drain plug

jehn    -- 12-16-2014 @ 7:52 AM
I have bought a new gastank from Bob Drake for my -41 bus coupe.
I am confused about the bottom drain plug which was delivered by the tank.
When I screw it in to the tank it will only go half the way and then it is stop.
There is even not a seal for the plug and I am afraid it become to leak without a seal.
Is there anybody how know anything about this?

It's a pipe plug and it has tapered threads. It should not leak.

  Thanks for your fast reply.
So you mean that the plug is a little bit conic?
I had a supposition about that but not sure att all.
Thanks a lot.

It's basically an "interference fit" as the plug is tapered and gets larger towards the top.

The thread is NPT or National Pipe Thread, yes it is conical. Do use a sealer on the threads. There are only a couple sealers that resist Gasoline. Permatex "High Tack" gasket sealant is one.

If I canĀ“t get Permatex, do You know any other fuel resistant sealer?
Thanks so much guys for your advices.

Do Not use a sealer or Teflon tape on the plug. Just tighten it until it seals.

Seems to be different advices about thread sealent.
I think I put in the plug and put a little fuel in to the tank to make a test without sealent.

The web is your friend. I would suggest you use google to find out if NPT thread form requires thread sealant. NOTE: NPTF is different thread form than NPT. Tom is correct in saying not to use Teflon tape.

Yes, the web and also the Ford V8 club is the best friends!
Thanks again and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Ford Year from Sweden.

  Jehn,

The pipe threads used in cars were designed to seal without an additional sealant. The drain plug should seal without any additional sealant.

You should remove it every year to keep it from rusting in place. You can also add a small amount of anti-sieze compound to the threads to keep it from rusting in place.

I have no idea of the brands available in Sweden, so you will have to do your own research on that. You might want to contact some members of the Club that live in Sweden for advice. Here is a link to the Website.

  Thanks for your advice Tom.
Of course I am a member of the Swedish V8 club but sometimes the members are not so active to discuss as you in the US club.
Now I have got the solution about the gas tank drain plug and is satisfied.
