Is there any axle housing length differences between 1931-40?

Not sure about A's but 1935-48 housings are interchangeable.
The differences were in the brakes and suspension/spring mounts. In the 30's and 40's they changed the widths a couple of times.
Early 1932 housings may be similar to A's.

There is some difference in length and also the way in which the wishbones mount to the housings.

Use the nifty search feature on this forum to search for "BANJO REARS". Near the bottom of the thread is a response from "39 KEN" pointing to the definitive article on this subject. There are several differences.

According to the Green Book, the housings are used as follows: '32 (no mention of '33-'34), '35-'36, '37-'40, '41, and '42-'48. They carry different designations for each of these applications because of differences. The '28-'31 Model A housings are not adaptable to later years.

if I would use a 38 rear end with a shortened drive shaft and tube, how would the width look or should I shorten the dim.

  Johnsa,

Your question would be easier to answer if you post what year car you have and if you have rear fenders.

I would think that the '38 axle assembly, with a shortened torque tube, would work very well under a "A".
You might have some spring difficulties mounting the spring to the body, however, nothing that can't be overcome.
The drums on the '38 will be the large bolt pattern, they can be changed to the '40 and later drums and hydraulic brakes with 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern with no problems.
