Topic: Head Torque After Rebuid

What is the proper method of re-torquing heads after an engine rebuild ? After warmup and then torque to 60 ft-lbs after cool down ?and is cool down to cold or some intermediate point. The engine is a 59AB. Thanks for any insights

There are no doubt a few differing opinions on the proper method.
Assuming you have the authentic cast iron heads, the proper torque specification is 50 - 60#.
I suggest you make certain all threaded studs are CLEAN as are the nuts. Using the proper sequence, I bring the torque to specification in three steps. I go over them once at 40#, again at 50# and finally at 60#.
There should be no need to torque the heads after the engine has been brought to operating temperature. However, if it brings you more assurance, do so after the engine has come back to ambient temperature.

Thanks Kube for the info - I have aluminum heads (Edelbrock). Do they require a different torque than the 60 ft-lbs ?

Ford aluminum heads are torqued to 40'/#. Follow sequence from center outward to the two ends. Re torque after first warm and after cool, then again after a couple of hundred miles and after cool. Use washers under the nuts as Ford did. Contact the Mfg. to see if they recommend another torque value.

Torque setting for aluminum heads with flat steel washers under the nuts is 35 to 40 ft lbs at room temp.
