Topic: How to test Power window relays

I have accumulated several extras most are questionable if any good.. Is there a way to bench test them to make sure they will carry a load?

Continuity is no problem but many times they will show continuity but either stick under load or fail to stay closed.

Also is there a way to dress the points?

Thanks in advance,

You can use a burnishing blade to dress the points. Remove as little material as possible.

Relays stick or fail to operate due to worn pivot points.I know of no way to check them out, except for operating them and watching the action.

If you know an old telephone repair tech, they had ways to check and repair them.

The relays that fail to stay closed, likely have shorted turns. The insulation on them breaks down, just like the ignition coils. They get warm when activated and then the turns short out.

Current draw is probably the best test that you can give the relays. I do not know the normal draw, but if you have a few good relays, you can average the current draw and use that as a guideline.

Right now I am thinking of setting up a loaded circuit, either a motor or a hydraulic pump and function testing them multiple times, Check the load with an am meter.. I tried radio shack for a burnishing tool and the young man was totally amazed.. The concept was totally foreign to him.. I did find them on line though so I do believe we can get off to the races as soon as I get my load figured out.. I do have one NOS to compare them too. Thanks for your help Tom
