Topic: per/tronix pointless kit

Have any of you used the per/tronix kit to replace the points, if so what have been the results? I have a 46 and was thinking about this, I have replaced the points in my 57 Olds and my 67 and they work great.

Thanks----SID

In my experience, Pertronix units run great--as long as they run. I had one for about 5 years before it died without a whimper. Have since gone back to points and frankly see no difference in performance. As the saying goes, "Points will always get you home."

I too thought they would be the way to go, but after trailering the car back home, now have returned to the original points. Since my kit was still under warranty, I sent it back asking them to analyise it and they reported that the unit was good, and sent a new kit back.
My kit (1949 Ford stock) worked fine until the temperature and engine got hot. Then it would not start or stay running once it started.
I have heard others say that they would have nothing else. Guess the answer is, 'works for some, but not all'.

I have an electronic crab in my '47 and have had no problems. I'm in the northeast where temp's vary minus 20 to plus 100.

However, it is true "points will always getting you home."

However again, the advantage of an electronic is (normally) routine good performance without maintenance, as long as the unit is working i.e. 5 years ?

I carry a spare along with a spare carb and fuel pump. True spare parts are an investment but always at the ready and likely will be used eventually.
