Hi, I am going to install a new steering wheel on my 36 FORD Coupe Can I just remove the steering box drop it low as it will go should I be able to remove the horn rod or do I have to drop the steering box more past the drivers side drag link and tie rod in order to remove the horn rod safely? Thanks

You may be asle to push it through your rear roll down window. Be careful to not allow the rod to bend, but it will flex just a little. If itg won't go, then yes, you'll have to drop the support at the dash and loosen the steering box mount to allow it to swing toward the open drivers door.

In any case, the job will be dirty, so protect your upholstery.

The rod has to come out. However, as ford38v8 said you cannot bend the rod. If you do you will open yourself up to a world of grief.

It is not necessary to drop the steering column to remove the rod but you will need to remove the floorboard, two bolts holding the gear box to the frame, the two bolts that hold the drop to the dash, as well as the electrical bulb and hardware on the end of the column. For complete instructions and pictures send me your email and I will forward the info.
